This was a lovely story. It follows the story of two Italian immigrants, who initially immigrate under somewhat dire circumstances, a build beautiful lives alongside friends that become adopted family, and eventually their own family. There is heartbreak and joy, good times and hard times. Some parts will leave you sniffly.

One thing that was a bit irksome about this book is that there are some discrepancies that (in my opinion) should have been picked up in editing. Like the difference between the Balkans and the Baltic (i.e. the Serbian girls that the author refers to as "Baltic beauties", it should be "Balkan beauties"); the questionably estimated travel time for trans-Atlantic ship travel, the fact that the author refers to the son as a Army soldier after describing him wearing a "crisp white uniform" (wouldn't that mean he was in the Navy? The Army doesn't wear dress whites) Just weird stuff like that.

Other than the odd discrepancies, it was overall a heartwarming read.

Was disappointed in this Trigiani novel.Loved her others, but this one spent too much time on describing surroundings, clothing and other things that contribute but do not make up a novel (unless you are Colm Toibin) and not enough time on plot. The expanse of the story was immense and the plot moved with both excruciating slowness and super speed sporting huge gaps. The last 1/4 of the book read like a plot outline instead of a story. The title gave away the one thing that pulled me along, and then wasn't really about her at all after she became the Shoemaker's wife. It was about all sorts of adjunct characters. The first part in Italy was lovely, and the next part in New York had some shining moments, but on the whole, I would not pass this one along to a friend. Still love this writer, but not this book.
At the very heart of this family saga is Enza, the strong, determined, intelligent, loving, resourceful heroine, from the Italian alps. How could I not love this young girl of substance who remained true to her family and to herself as she blossomed into a woman that saw her skills as a seamstress raise her from indentured servitude to the expert costume maker to Enrico Caruso and others at the Met. Opera? But, it was Ciro Lazzari, the orphaned boy raised by nuns in those same alps, who had stolen her heart, when she was just fifteen, who caused Enza to leave that position (and a man who offered a life of pampering) for the dream of building a future and a family with him.

This is not a lighthearted story. It is filled with the hardships and difficulties of life, and the grit and determination to overcome them. Horrible circumstances make for a dark read which is saved by the strength of hardworking, driven characters.

The writing is beautiful and provides a glimpse into the lives of immigrants who flocked to the U. S., in hopes of a better life, during the early part of the 1900s through WWII. Thank you Adriana Trigani for a heart stirring read!
I must confess, I bought this book because the reviews were so high on it. Sarah's Key was the first Trigiani novel I bought and I really liked it. But I bought another one and was disappointed. I love the history this book covered and the way of life both in Italy and the US in the early 1900's. I especially enjoyed the pure love story - though a bit hard to believe (I admit I'm a bit of a 'love conquers all' cynic). I liked the character Enza and fully understood Ciro and his feelings. I really, really liked the Helen character and found her to be very down to earth and normal. Her sense and sense of humor was up my alley! If I had to say one thing that really bothered me and, honestly, made me skip many pages strictly out of boredom was the constant descriptions of the country, cities, clothing, faces of people she passed, right down to the ground she walked on was tedious and way over done. The premise of the story line was enjoyable and parts brought tears to my eyes - so, yes, it was a good read if you can just skim over the many, many pages of unnecessary demographics.
