So when I initially picked up this book, I put it down rather quickly again, exactly because of what another reviewer stated in one of the top reviews: The main protagonist is literally the most overpowered person in the entire world, in every conceivable way. The reason for him being so overpowered is because he has been trained in, well .. everything since birth, in a secluded monastery.
However, during a dry season I decided to give it another chance, and after forcing my way through the beginning of the book, I realized that I was kind of in the wrong. You see, in my opinion, you need to view this book for what it is, and view the protagonist for what he is.

If you've ever heard about the AI and paperclip production thought experiment, then this is similar. If you haven't, make sure to look it up, and then the rest of this review will make more sense.

The protagonist of this book is someone who has been trained from birth to have the best possible chance of being able to take over the world, should that be necessary. To facilitate this, he's been taught a very thorough and strict set of rules that he uses as a guide for anything and everything. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, however, the last and most important rule he is taught is not as it was supposed to be. He ends up thinking the most important thing in the world is to protect and serve his friends. This confuses him a great deal, since he doesn't even understand what the word "friend" means, or how to get one. In fact, throughout all three books, he still thinks there's some person out there in the world who's simply responsible for "assigning" him friends.

Anyway: Imagine that the protagonist is kind of like the AI with the paperclips. He's just trying to maximize the chances of him being able to protect his friends. So what does he do? Well, he decides that since criminals that are not under his control could potentially harm his friends, he might as well simply take over the entire world's criminal underworld, just so that he can make sure his friends are protected. The protagonist is much like the AI: He's just trying to maximize the objective function. What better way to ensure that his friends are safe but to take control of anything that could harm them?

It's a really fun read, even though the protagonist is so overpowered, and in the later books it also turns out there are some more, well, mystical explanations for some of his power. If you're one of those people that, like me, try to hunt for those highly rated fantasy books in the hope that they will be on the same level as, say, Brent Weeks or some such, then I think this book would definitely be for you. Just make sure you understand the protagonist for what he is.

It's not a bad book but it is very slow and not very interesting to me. It's more like a confused love story than an actual adventure book so far. It's very dramatic and a lot of the characters overreact. The MC is not a bad character; I just wished he'd get straight to the point instead of assuming and guessing for every emotion and thought of the other characters. I got maybe 80% into book 2 before putting it down. It just got really boring for me and I moved on. I'm in no hurry to pick it back up unless I have no cell service and need to rely on the good ol kindle for entertainment. This book is just too slow and boring for my taste. A bunch of amateur scheming, light politics and weird love plots with little to no action and violence going on. Maybe it'll get better and it probably will but you gotta be patient and get past book 2 or at least I'm hoping it gets better. I can't really recommend this book to action/violent lovers, unless you like cheesy warrior love stories. I can however recommend a book called (God of Martial Arts) for action.
You can ignore this paragraph of the review if you'd like. It's just here to describe my background and why I'm inclined to give this book such a low score. I've read a LOT of fantasy fiction. I've got two bookshelves full of the books I kept after giving away several bookshelves more of other fantasy books that weren't worth keeping. I'm not at all a casual reader of the genre. That said, this will appeal to some, and I don't mean this review as an elitist diatribe. I would caution that people who share my tastes will find disappointment here.

This book is protagonist porn in every sense of the word. The actual idea on paper is pretty interesting. Guy is trained from birth to be a master at a wide array of skills and finds himself in a world he really doesn't understand beyond a basic academic level. A bemused commentary on tropes and customs from such a character would have been hilarious, and elevated the writing to a level of comedy. Instead the book takes itself too seriously while breaking quite a few rules of good writing, namely

Show, don't tell. The author TELLS the reader how to feel about everything under the sun. Most of all, the reader is told how to feel in detail about Gary Stu of a main character.

Don't hop between perspectives. The narrative is constantly jumping back and forth between who is thinking what, making the point of view of a given chapter difficult to keep track of when several characters at once are falling over themselves to fawn over the lead character.

The worldbuilding is a mess and only serves the purpose of glorifying Gary Stu. Entire details about mages, empires, and customs pop up into place in the story only where they can make him seem more intelligent or intimidating. In a good book, the characters exist in a world that appears to exist around them. In this book, the world rises around a single character in the most exhausting display of wish-fulfillment fantasy I've seen since name of the wind. Yea, I said it. They're both awful books with way too many details contrived for the sake of the lead characters.

There is no real character conflict. Being a master of everything and somehow ignorant of dating and social customs is not a character flaw. In this book, it's just a device to show he's even amazing at things he doesn't understand.

There's no real challenge for him to overcome, and the author goes out of his way to make it seem like Gary's pinky finger could cure cancer.
