Megan chance is amazing author and although her book, inamorata was my all-time favorite, this is a close second and I've heard her other books are even better. What I loved about this book is her strong character development and her ease of storytelling as she weaves the tale like nobody can. Ms. Chance is up there amoung my top 10 favorite authors for sure which is a high compliment for me because I have read thousands of books and no I don't review them all. I would get into the details of the book more here, but her work speaks for itself and if you have read even one of her novels, then you know what I'm talking about. So take a risk, and read this amazing book because you will be sad when it's over and left wanting more-- just like her other works. You almost wish the books were trilogies because you get so involved with the characters. I got a gift certificate for Christmas and I know she wants some sort of award for "the spiritualist" so that is going to be my next book, and I'm very excited about it.Tags : The Portrait [Megan Chance] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Wonderful Story! This book is about imperfect characters living the true meaning of love. Knowing the real person and making a choice to love them anyway. Great read - I enjoyed it thoroughly!
I love a story based on a kernel of truth and creatively expanded. While I thought the dialogue was not authentic much of the time, the author did a great job of leading us to a surprising and satisfying ending. This would make a great movie that I would definitely see, especially with it's french setting.
This is a well written novel. It is set in the historical bohemian art world of New York where creative personalities could reign unleashed. Well developed characters and a unique plot make this novel worth reading.
This is a truly one of kind novel that will leave you a little sad at the end despite it having a happy ending. It's a novel filled with with strong emotions and passions. The heroine is a very hurt and broken young women from having to deal with an unloving family. The hero is a man who suffers from a mental issues (he is bipolar) that has left him broken and unwilling to trust anyone. Put these two together and you have a Geary wrenching and beautiful story of love.
It's easy to fall in love with this novel...
This was gutwrenchingly hard to read at times, NOT because it's poorly written, but because of the honest portrayal of the mental anguish and struggles of Jonas, a manic-depressive artist. He seems to be on a collision course to the darkest fate of all, and the reader suffers his pain each step of the way. When the possibility of hope arrives in the form of Imogene, an art student who's dealing with her own struggles, the reader prays that these two souls can heal each other. It is a lovely, lovely story that will linger in your heart.
I finished THE PORTRAIT last night, and I had to take a few hours to recover. I was not prepared for how this book would affect me. The author writes some of the most beautiful prose I've ever read, and Jonas puts other dark, tortured heroes to shame.
This is not your garden-variety ordinary historical romance. The setting is unique - New York 1855. The story is unique to say the least, and the conflict is realistic, not manufactured. THE PORTRAIT sparkles from the first page to the last. Jonas, Rico, and Genie are beautifully written and the story is wonderfully different.
I found Imogene's quiet strength admirable and her struggle to step outside her sister's shadow and find her own voice courageous. There are so many things I loved about this book and will carry with me for a very long time - the message of hope at the end for Jonas and Genie, Genie telling Jonas that she would keep him safe, Jonas's painful belief that people he loves always leave him because he's just too much work, Genie's almost childish pleasure when Rico and Jonas gave her her "nickname", and, of course, Rico's selflessness.
The Portrait should be on everyone's "keeper" shelf. Ms. Chance's story of redemption, courage, and hope is unforgettable.
Anyone tired of reading cliche romances should check this book out. I've never read one like this before and I probably never will.
DARK doesn't begin to describe this one. Jonas Whitaker is a brilliant artist who also struggles with bipolar (manic/depressive) disorder. He has been left by people who could not contend with his mental illness his whole life. He is lonely, isolated, and on the brink of "madness".
Imogene comes to him as a student wanting to learn from a "master". She has been overlooked her whole life and seeks to find approval from her uncaring father through learning to paint.
Jonas is at first unimpressed by Imogene, but over time develops an obsession for her. She becomes his muse, and through his eyes Imogene begins to see herself as beautiful.
This book brings Imogene and you as the reader through one of Jonas's mood cycles. The fictional depiction of a manic/depressive cycle is as "real" as it can get. You are swept away during his manic phase....you feel the energy, the activity, and the creativity. Imogene is drawn to Jonas and call him a "shooting star"....a typical description of an individual in a manic phase. Jonas's tumble into depression is also captured. You feel the despair, the hopelessness, the fatigue. It is a fictional masterpiece of the cruelty of this mental illness.
The love story is sweet and touching. Imogene vows to stay with Jonas...no matter what. I found myself wondering how it would all work, but Imogene made me believe that she was the one person that could endure the "better or worse", the "in sickness and health"..."till death parts them". It is a beautiful love story.
