The Eight Katherine Neville Books Reviews
What a fabulous book. I have read it 5 times or more and recommended it to so many people. This fast paced book takes you on a wild ride through centuries of history and well known characters, with a personal twist to their stories.
A must to read and revisit every few years. Silence your cell phones and immerse yourself in an amazing adventure. Enjoy
An intriguing puzzle of a story, Katherine Neville's novel The Eight is a tale about an ancient mystery involving a chess set given to King Charlemagne for his birthday and originating in the middle east. The set gives clues to mysteries of life that great scientists and mathematicians have labored to discoverer over the centuries. Because of these ancient mysteries the set brings inherent danger and intrigue along with it and because of that it was hidden in the French convent Montglane Abbey until the dangers French Revolution shook the abbey. The Abbess took the pieces and scattered them with the nuns of the abbey, including the young cousins Valentina and Mireille.
The Eight is their story as they unravel the puzzle of the Montglane Chess Service. This game proves to be dangerous and involves such notables as Talleyrand, Robspierre, Napolean, Benedict Arnold, William Blake and others. There is also a parallel story set in 1972 with computer expert Catherine Velis. I love a story set in two time eras and Katherine Neville does an excellent job interweaving the elements of the story and creating suspense in both. She has also done a great deal of research regarding historic figures and science, mathematical and mystical theories.
The one drawback I found with the book, was that the language was at times a bit clunky, but I am willing to overlook that for a good tale.
A story that does not let you go, mixing the history of revo!utionary France and the beginning of OPEC in a captivating game of chess.
I was turning the pages to see which historic figure, politician, artist, scientist or philosopher would turn up next. I highly entertaining book that I recommend highly to anybody who loves history and intrigue.
Female Indiana Jones looking for artifacts with chess in the background. No need to understand chess. meet a lot of characters, buy into the story & just enjoy the story. I re-read this book every 5 or so years. Its still fun to re-read as the 1st time. Wish this had been made into a movie.
I originally read this book a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I've just finished re-reading it and was just as entertained by it this time as I was when I first read it such a long time ago.
Although chess doesn't really interest me, the numerology and the interspersing of historical facts throughout the novel kept me reading. Also, the weaving together of the two time-lines/plots bringing the reader back to the present day was, I thought, well done.
Very clever.
I thought the only blip in the story was the modern day romantic interest...a little contrived and formulaic but I was happy to skim read that section as it had little impact on the flow of the plot.
I just finished this for the second time! The first was over 25 years ago and with age I have appreciated it even more! How does an author take historical facts and then let imagination add one fictional idea to the mix around which is built a complex story and characters that spans 200 years? It is so convincingly accomplished that I have to keep reminding myself what is real and what is not. This time around the internet and the instant word look up features in made my reading especially enjoyable. I would like to see it in a thriller of a movie but the sets and locations would cost a fortune! So enjoy on the personal movie screen in you mind!
Eight is an exceptional work by a superb artist who handles words like great painters handle their best paint brushes. this book will remain a treasure for me in my library forever. It is a historical fiction that feels like facts. Facts that glisten like diamonds and rubies across the centuries. I recommend this book. It entertained me and educated me about France, Charlemagne, and a quest worthy of The DaVinci Code. I even went to the internet to read her website. I never do that. Except this time. You should too. Bravo Katherine.
