If We Survive Andrew Klavan Books
If We Survive by Andrew Klavan is a fast-paced, action-filled, rollercoaster of events put into a 339-page package. Join Will Peterson and his three friends as they journey to Central America to help rebuild a school. Everything seems to be going well, as the rebuilding progresses, and they form friends with the local people around them. However, something happens that changes their lives forever: a revolution breaks out. Suddenly, Will and his friends are being targeted by revolutionaries with guns, and they must manage to survive in this extremely dangerous world. Traversing through a dangerous jungle, they must hide and escape from revolutionaries hunting them down with guns, all while trying to escape. However, they have one ray of hope: a veteran warrior who has lost all of his beliefs and may betray them at any second. Their only hope is to reach the U.S. safe and sound.Personally, my favorite part of the book was when Will and Nicki were trapped in a raging river, sandwiched between a waterfall to their back and a hungry alligator to their front. As both of them tried to survive this seemingly impossible situation, it shows how much danger all of them were constantly. They had to escape this deadly situation with only their minds, their wills, and an empty machine gun. Will managed to devise a plan to survive, which showed how much he had grown through all of the horrifying experiences he had experienced. When his plan worked, it demonstrated the unbreakable bond you had formed with the characters, something only a great novel can achieve.
If We Survive is the definition of survival. Will and his friends are thrown, completely unprepared, into a deadly situation, and they must somehow find a way to escape alive. Through their many unforgettable experiences, they learn skills and ways to live, even in adverse circumstances. They are constantly hunted by revolutionaries with better guns, more people, and more skill than them, yet, they manage to come up with plans to help keep them alive in the gaping jaws of death.
Klavan’s style of writing is very interesting. He takes an impersonal approach, choosing to narrate the story from the view of one of the victims trapped by the revolutionaries, high schooler Will Peterson. By taking this view, Klavan is able to form effective bonds between Will and his friends, and is able to develop Will’s character to its fullest extent. As the story progresses, Will changes dramatically, going from an initially timid, shy high schooler, to a brave warrior ready for anything by the end of the story. While other authors take similar approaches, Klavan does it like no other, emphasizing other characters’ personalities through the lens of a seemingly normal teenager thrown into a life-or-death situation.
If you like adventure and action-filled novels, like The Hunger Games or The Thinning, you will love this book. Also, this story has romantic elements, but not to the extent where it is the main aspect of the story. As Will develops feelings for one of his friends, but finds out that she likes someone else in their group, he must decide how to handle his feelings in spite of the deadly situations he and his friends always find themselves in. I recommend If We Survive to anyone who likes realistic novels about teenagers finding themselves in situations that change their lives completely, for good or for worse. If you like seeing characters like everyday, ordinary people being thrown into adverse circumstances, you will definitely find this book very interesting.
In conclusion, If We Survive by Andrew Klavan is a novel everybody should pick up because of its fast-paced action, excellent character development, and valuable life lessons. After all, haven’t you ever wanted to be chased by thousands of angry revolutionaries with machine guns through a deadly jungle, all to find an airplane that may not even exist in the first place? I thought so.

If We Survive Andrew Klavan Books Reviews
I have a 13 year old son who reads books in a couple hours. We're always trying to find new Authors and new series to introduce to him. He loves the books by Andrew klavan. I buy everything he writes.
The story -- a group of young missionaries who are caught up in a Latin American revolution and learn the hard way that the revolutionaries are even worse than the old, corrupt government -- moves along pretty well. The narrative gets a bit bogged down in introspection at a couple of points in the story, and the different characters are particular "types" (the flaky drama queen, the nerdy fan of "justice-seeking" socialists, and so forth). But the story is otherwise well-written, and suspense is expertly built, and the drawbacks are easily forgiven. The only ones who could absolutely dislike this book are the useful idiots who idolize Hugo Chavez and Che Guevara.
This was the first of Klavan's books that I've read and it won't be the last. Not knowing much about his work, I figured I'd start here and see where I ended up.
If We Survive is definitely action-packed, from nearly the first page to the last and has a level of detail to the settings and situations that draw the reader in. Even with extraordinary situations, I could easily relate to the characters and their various back stories, which did not detract from the main plot.
...to make sure it was ok. There's some violence, but none of it is gratuitous. I particularly liked the stereotypical characters. My children have not met such persons before, and I had good discussions with them about these characters, e.g., a liberal who will stick his head in the sand to ignore an ugly truth. My 14 year old son read it first, then my 13 year old daughter, then my 10 year old daughter. They all loved it, and couldn't put it down. I am ordering Klavan's entire "Homelander" series for them.
This was my first Andrew Klavan book. I now look forward to reading others. I'm not a young adult, in fact I'm 66, a long way from the 16-year-old who tells this story, but it held my interest. The central character, Will, sees himself as a typical teenager, no hero, not that religious, just checking off his high school's service requriement. As the book unfolds he displays courage and decency in a variety of hair-raising situations, and still manages to sound and react in ways that are age-appropriate, to these old ears at least.
The book is not only about what happens to Will and how he steps up, but about the pilot sent to retrieve Will and his small youth group after a week-long mission trip in a central American country ripe for yet another revolution. The pilot says he is an ex-Marine, never mind the saying, "once a Marine, always a Marine." The man has lost faith in pretty much everything, seemingly, but a young woman accompanying the teens isn't willing to accept that. Church groups take trips like this all the time, and that part of the book is believable.
The story opens in a cantina where the group and their youth pastor are waiting to be picked up to go home. The illusion of safety and security evaporates when their waiter is shot dead before their eyes on the first or second page, right after Klavan makes you start to like the guy.
Be prepared for things to get a lot worse before they get better, but along the way Klavan tells a great story, manages to keep the suspense going, shows much about human nature, the nature of faith, and of what's still good about America.
LOVE this book and will be buying more from this author. I listen to Mr. Klavan's podcasts and appreciate his sensible approach. I am passing this book on to my kids to read. I know they will enjoy it. It's not stodgey at all but there is a wholesomeness to the underlying message that I appreciate. Hard to find books these days for tween/pre-teens, so happy to have found this one.
