Hateful Burden The Carrier Trilogy Volume 1 Natalie Gibson 9780615811246 Books
Author Natalie Gibson has presented book one of the trilogy "Hateful Burden" which is a departure from her previous series.A dark, moody look into both the fantasy world of paranormal and early attempts at treating psychological disorders this is a book that has more creep and scare factor than most horror books I have read. Yet it also has romantic love, familial love and friendship bonding that are portrayed with sensitivity and finesse.
If someone does something so horrific that they cannot remember it, that their brain has shut down all memory, are they truly guilty? What if they are different. That person's very DNA is not essentially human but not exactly something else, are they still part of our society and subject to the same laws we operate under?
One of the most unusual vampire stories I have read, it left me with more questions that I hope are answered in the books to follow. I will be reading them.

Hateful Burden The Carrier Trilogy Volume 1 Natalie Gibson 9780615811246 Books Reviews
I have been wanting to delve in "Hateful Burden" for some time now. Now that I have read this book I wish I wouldn't have waited so long! This is one of the most original horror novels I've ever read! That, in itself would make me like it but the book is so well written and the story so well told that I must say I love this book. It is a Victorian-period gothic horror tale and the scenes and dress are extremely accurate.
The story centers around Ramillia, a young woman who has spent most of her life in an insane asylum for a murder she doesn't remember committing. Enter Julian, her provider, her protector and her savior. But, is Julian too good to be true? What transpires in this fast-paced tale is exciting, often horrific and extremely original, which is hard to say anymore. There is some very graphic imagery but it is always an integral part of the story. In fact, there is nothing I found to be filler or fluff of any kind.
The book brings to mind one of my all-time favorite stories, "The Picture of Dorian Gray." The author obviously did her homework to bring the gaslight and Victorian period to life. There is also just a touch of steampunk added to really make this one stand out. I can't wait for the upcoming sequel, "Wretched Blood." I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great horror story, but also to anyone who likes thrillers, period pieces, and even mysteries. Well done Ms. Gibson!
Gibson's talent for mind-bending, vivid, and bizarre storytelling is nothing short of extraordinary. Not only is Hateful Burden one of the most unique novels I've ever read, it is also one of the darkest. The way the author portrays the dismal Victorian era setting and her usage of terms and vocabulary of the time had me hooked from the very beginning, startled back to an age when insane asylums were commonplace and their methods grotesque and horrifying. It was literally like taking a trip back in time to an era that is not only fascinating in its propriety, but is also mortifying in its primitiveness.
Throughout the book, we see the world through the eyes of insane asylum patient Ramillia as she struggles to make sense of the mystery surrounding her strange childhood and her parents' bizarre murder. She must also understand her place in this eccentric and sinister world of Carriers that she is thrust into the moment her betrothed comes to rescue her from her captivity. Only he isn't everything he appears to be, and neither is this to-good-to-be-true life that Ramillia is swept into. Soon it becomes clear that there is a far more evil plan in place and her role in it is both stunning and surreal.
If you're looking for an easy and joyful waltz through a beautiful Victorian age setting, then this book is not for you. The dark imagery in this novel and its shocking plot will have you gasping, cringing, and holding your breath through each twist and turn. It serves as a testament and a reminder of the horrors of asylum life, and yet also has this fantasy undercurrent that grows and mutates as the story progresses, becoming more and more horrifying with each and every page. Overall, an intense and compelling read that will leave you wanting more!
I'm not really a reader of thrillers and suspense, but I found this book to be fairly good. Now that I've read this one, there's no way that I can not read the others when they're published. Loved Ramillia from the start. The ending could've been more detailed for the preparation of the next installment, but overall I enjoyed it.
3.75 Stars - Okay, where's the next book?!?! This story had such an interesting plot and tone that I read it fairly quickly . . . only to find out that there isn't a second book in this "trilogy". Is there ever going to be one??? I hope so!
I started Hateful Burden and thought ok I can see where this will end up, Nope I was wrong. Neck snapping plot twist! Before you read Hateful burden put on your neck brace and prepare for an onslaught of original writing, well developed characters and roller coaster like twists and turns in the plot. This book should have a warning at the beginning stating you must be this tall to read Hateful Burden. Height requirement mandatory! Strap yourself in for an amazing ride.
